What Inspired us This Month: August - Details and Design
As we reach the end of August, our designers are buzzing with fresh ideas inspired by the world around them. To celebrate the end of the month, we’re diving into everything from the tranquil beauty of the ocean to clever ways to bring style into back-to-school organization. We’ve invited three of our talented designers to share what’s lighting a fire in their creative minds right now. Whether it’s the soothing colors of coastal sunsets or practical tips for a stylish study space, their personal stories and insights are sure to resonate.
As we're approaching the end of the Summer, something that inspired me this month is the beach!
The beach is a different experience for everyone, but for me, between the rhythmic whooshing of the waves, and the soft sand swirled around your toes, it's a way of tactically reconnecting myself with nature, and a reminder of its never-faulting beauty.
When I think of design in tandem with the beach, I automatically think of Sandcastle House, designed by architect Harry Gesner, in Malibu, CA. Before he started designing, Gesner camped out on the beach to listen to the environment around him, and let it inspire and guide him with orientation of the home, materials, and overall layout to try and bring the outdoors in. The round design is welcoming from both the outdoor and indoor perspective, fostering a community feel. He also utilized natural and upcycled materials wherever possible, such as telephone poles as support columns on each side of the fireplace, driftwood for a spiral staircase, and even kitchen components salvaged from an installation at the LA convention center. While a lot of materials are earthy by nature, and/or may be second-hand, the overall feel of the space is still very much upscale. I love how he thoughtfully designed a space that commands respect from everyone who enters, but is still a comfortable and approachable living space. To me, this parallels the very nature of the ocean -- a powerful, yet inviting environment.

In my recent travels to southern California, I was inspired by these amazing stone formations.
The gorgeous colors, textures, shapes and patterns that occur naturally provide so many jumping off points to consider when designing for clients.  By taking cues from nature, we can create visual interest, harmony and movement within a space by layering multiple elements: think hard and soft (rocks and plants), linear and organic (natural patterning), light and dark (colors).
Just consider this beautiful, patterned stone wall.  The subtle, seemingly effortless vertical striping effect that is, at first glance, unnoticeable, underlies careful planning and placement of each stone.  It highlights how we, as designers, can utilize natural elements and manipulate them in interesting and unexpected ways to elevate any space.
As summer comes to an end and the fall back-to-school routine starts, I find myself inspired by clients who invest in organizational tools to make their lives easier without sacrificing style!
1. long low trays for the countertop or entry table– a great place for car keys and everyday items.
2. Assorted decorative boxes are great for storing remotes when you don't want to look or search for them.
3. Easy to change memo boards with magnets!
